2 November 2005 - SPADs Report for September 2005

Navigation

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) have produced their last monthly Signals Passed at Danger (SPAD) report for September 2005.   All further SPAD reports will be on a quarterly basis, as agreed by HMRI and the Under-Secretary of State for Transport.

Summary of the September report is as follows:

  • 31 signals were passed at danger on Network Rail Controlled Infrastructure, 5 fewer than September 2004.   1 more than the average for September since 2001.

  • There were no serious SPAD's (risk ranking score 20+), compared with 1 in September 2004.

  • 12 SPAD's were at signals with previous SPAD history.

  • 1 train ran past the signal by 200 yards or more.

  • 16 trains ran past the signal by less than 25 yards or less.

  • 13 instances showed it was not the first time the driver had passed a signal at danger.

  • 15 cases showed where the Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) operated successfully.

The above figures are interim and may change when investigations are completed.
