September 2005

The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) have produced their
last monthly Signals Passed at Danger (SPAD) report for September 2005.
All further SPAD reports will be on a quarterly basis, as agreed by HMRI and the
Under-Secretary of State for Transport.
Summary of the September report is as follows:
-
31 signals were passed at danger on Network Rail Controlled
Infrastructure, 5 fewer than September 2004. 1 more than the average
for September since 2001.

There were no serious SPAD's (risk ranking score 20+), compared
with 1 in September 2004.
-
12 SPAD's were at signals with previous SPAD history.
-
1 train ran past the signal by 200 yards or more.
-
16 trains ran past the signal by less than 25 yards or less.
-
13 instances showed it was not the first time the driver had
passed a signal at danger.
-
15 cases showed where the Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS)
operated successfully.
The above figures are interim and may change when investigations
are completed.
