19 July 2005 - Consultation on Building
Regulations for Fire Safety
Navigation

A consultation has been launched by the Office of the Deputy
Prime Minister (ODPM), proposing a revision of all fire safety aspects of the
Building Regulations (part B) and supporting guidance in Approved Document B for
England and Wales.
The proposed revisions stem from fire safety experiences within
the following areas:
Areas the proposals would cover include the following:
-
Door-closing devices.
-
Loft conversion guidance changes.
-
Designing-in of fire safety.
-
Potential use of sprinklers.
The aim of the proposals is to ensure the following:
-
Higher level of fire safety for occupants of buildings.
-
Higher level of fire safety for Firefighters.
-
Make occupiers more aware of fire protection measures required.
The list above would also provide a better sourcing of
information for fire risk assessments under the new Regulatory Reform (Fire
Safety) Order 2005, due to come into force at the beginning of 2006.
Yvette Cooper, Housing Minister, commented on the consultation
by saying:
"Protecting people from fire in their homes and workplace
remains a key element of Government policy on fire safety. In this regard the
review has looked at fire safety in all types of premises including dwellings,
residential care homes and warehouses. It also considers the important role
sprinklers and other types of fire protection measures may have, particularly in
buildings where the occupants are most at risk."
