31 August 2005 - HSE Revise Guidance on PPE
Navigation

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have produced a revised
guidance on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), to assist employers who supply
and use PPE for compliance with their duties under the Personal Protective
Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (L25).
The updated guidance has been produced following guidance
queries received by the HSE, changes to Regulations and developments in PPE.
Requirements of the Regulations for PPE are as follows:
-
There must be a proper assessment before use, to ensure its
suitability for the work being done.
-
PPE equipment must be maintained and stored properly.
-
Workers using PPE must be provided with adequate instruction on
how to use it safely.
-
PPE equipment must be worn correctly by the user.
The guidance booklet has three main areas as follows:
-
Section One - sets out the Regulations and information on how to
comply with the requirements of the Regulations.
-
Section Two - provides details of varying types of PPE
available, hazard types that may require PPE, advice on the correct selection,
use and maintenance of PPE.
-
Section Three - provides information on the use and selection of
Personal Fall protection equipment when working at height.
There is also a re-issue of a free leaflet "A Short Guide to the Personal
Protective Equipment at Work Regulations. This leaflet provides a
short summary of the main requirements the law requires from employers with
common workplace hazards, where different types of PPE can be used for the
safety of the employees.
The maintenance and correct training of workers in PPE is also covered in the
leaflet.
The short guide is available in pdf format from the HSE website and can be
