30 August 2005 - New Health and Safety Partnership for Scotland

Navigation

The first meeting of a new Scottish Health and Safety Partnership has taken place in Glasgow.   It aims to improve health and safety within the workplace, as part of the Health and Safety Commission's (HSC's) working well together strategy for safer work places to 2010 and beyond and is supported by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), UK and Scottish Ministers.

The new Partnership comprises of the following:

  • Representatives from the UK.
  • Scottish and local government.
  • The Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives.
  • Health and safety professionals.
  • The Health and Safety Executive.
  • Representatives of the business community.
  • Trade Unions.

Margaret Burns, Chair of the Steering Committee Health and Safety Commissioner, said after the meeting:

"We know that there are many examples of good practice within the health and safety community, as well as by individual businesses with a good health and safety record. This partnership will help to spread best practice across the whole of Scotland.

"By bringing together all the key players and stakeholders in a partnership, we aim to target Scotland's priorities for improving health and safety more effectively.

"But this is also about co-ordinating effort across devolved and reserved government interests to promote the benefits to people, businesses and Scotland's economy of working in a safe and healthy environment.

"We also know that there are many examples of good practice within the health and safety community, as well as by individual businesses with a good health and safety record. This partnership will help to spread best practice across the whole of Scotland."

A steering committee will meet at least 3 times each year and will direct the work of the Partnership, aiming at prioritising action and implementation, using resources and expertise from the entire health and safety system in Scotland, by means of the following:

  • Scottish evidence on health and safety.
  • The Scottish Economy.
  • Industry.
  • Culture.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have provided new pages within their website for the Scottish Partnership and will provide progress on the Partnership's work within them.   The pages can be viewed by clicking the following:
