24 August 2005 - HSE Safety Advice for
Fairground Fun
Navigation

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in a bid to reduce the
amount of accidents to children at funfairs and theme parks, are advising
parents to protect their children during the summer holidays, by teaching them
the importance of complying with safety instructions.
There have been 320 injuries to children at funfairs and
amusement parks since 2001, many of which were preventable if safety
instructions had been complied with.
The advice given by the HSE for safe fun at amusement parks is
as follows:
-
Parents should check the height restrictions and make sure their
children are above the required height.
-
Parents should check that any restraints fit securely when
children are on the ride.
-
Parents should check that all rides are properly supervised.
-
Children should pay attention to all safety instructions given
to them by ride operators.
- Parents should make clear to their children that they must sit still while
on a ride.
Research undertaken by the HSE, found that children's perception to risk is
much lower than that of adults and it is therefore essential that parents
explain to children the dangers involved in kneeling or standing to wave whilst
on rides.
There is an Amusement Devices Inspection Procedure Scheme (ADIPS), which has
been jointly created by the HSE and the Fairgrounds and Amusement Parks Joint
Advisory Committee (JAC). The ADIPS provides a framework for
inspectors to monitor amusement devices, ensuring safety.
A sticker stating that rides have been inspected by the ADIPS should be
clearly displayed at rides and the HSE are advising parents to look out for this
sticker prior to children boarding rides.
The HSE have provided further information on the ADIPS which can be accessed
