23 August 2005 - Keep Children Safe From
Lead in Old Paint
Navigation

The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
are highlighting the risk to children when old paint is being removed for
re-decoration. A leaflet has been provided explaining the problems
and solutions on how to avoid the risks.
Old paint may contain harmful lead. If re-decoration
is being done within older homes, mainly built prior to the 1960's, and old
paint is being removed, then extra care is required to avoid any harmful dust or
fumes being inhaled or ingested.
The leaflets will be available in Doctors' Surgeries, DIY
Outlets and ante-natal clinics, where parents can be advised of the risks to
babies and children if re-decorating nurseries requires the removal of old
paint.
Lord Bach, Minister with responsibility for chemicals, said:
"This leaflet is being re-issued now as summer is a time when
many people take the opportunity to decorate. And many new parents often repaint
when converting a room to a nursery. The leaflet explains simple actions to
ensure that children are protected from inhaling any lead dust when their house
is redecorated."
