4 August 2005 - New HSE Research Report on
Level Crossings
Navigation

The Health and Safety Executive's Railway Inspectorate (HMRI)
have published a research report on railway level crossings, looking at
conditions arising at level crossings and how people react to them, perhaps
making errors.
The report, on behalf of the HSE, based their findings on 104
identified human factor issues at railway level crossings.
Claire Dickinson, member of HMRI Human Factor National Expertise
Team commented on the report and said:
"The research is important as level crossings now present the largest
risk of a multi-fatality train incident on the UK rail network.
"The report presents the human factors issues for each type of level
crossing. Human factors affecting safety on level crossings are not easily
managed, but it is intended that this research will inform HMRI's level
crossing strategy and help advance the debate on how to control and mitigate
the associated risks."
